HLaDOS – A Helpful GLaDOS

I’ve started a new project –  HLaDOS. HLaDOS is a Helpful Lifeform and Disk Operating System. I am working with somebody who has developed an AI, and I will be basing the AI for HLaDOS off of his AI.

HLaDOS will have a body based off of the GLaDOS lamp. Inside, there will be a raspberry pi. The raspberry pi will connect to a remote supercomputer to do all the work. The main supercomputer also crawls the web for facts when it isn’t being used.

HLaDOS will have a microphone, a camera, and speakers. She will be 2 feet tall, and she will hang from your ceiling.

HLaDOS will be designed to carry on conversations or to look up information.

HLaDOS will be available to anybody that can afford it. It will cost between $500-$1000 for the body. It will also cost $20/month because it uses a supercomputer that is costly to run.

If you have interest in funding HLaDOS, click here:Â http://www.igg.me/at/hlados

If you can’t afford to donate, it would also help to spread the word!

More Weather Balloon Updates!

Hi guys! A lot of you have been looking forward to the weather balloon launch. Personally, I didn’t think it was going to happen because it costs so much.

There’s an alternative to a weather balloon, though: A solar balloon. Solar balloons are made out of black garbage bags. They have a hole in the bottom to suck in and push out air when required. When it’s sunny, the air inside heats up, and causes the balloon to rise.

Why am I interested in using a solar balloon? Well, weather balloons cost $20. Then I have to fill the balloon with either helium or hydrogen. Hydrogen explodes, so I’m not using that any time soon. There is a shortage of helium, and it costs about $150 per KG of lift.

Solar balloons are made of garbage bags. Not only that, but they are made out of cheap garbage bags, because cheaper bags are generally thinner. I can get a pack of 28 garbage bags for $3 at Dollarama.

So, Instead of spending $170 on the balloon, I’ll be spending $3. This way, I can launch the balloon for $100-$200, instead of  $300-$400. Either way, we still need your donations, so help us out by donating :)

Peacful Survival

Hello again! You probably remember me announcing that a peacful survival world was coming to the server. Progress has been made, and it should be good to go as soon as the spawn it built! For those of you who don’t know, the main world will become a world where there will be no lockette, PvP, and griefing. The peaceful world will have lockette, no griefing, and PvP disabled. The majority of people who join want to play peacefully, so we’ve listened to your requests!

Thank you for joining us on the VoldaCraft Server!

Server Recovered!

We were all getting tired of the server crashing every few minutes, or when somebody entered the survival world. I’m happy to announce that it is fixed, and that it was simply a plugin taking over all the resources and disabling the worlds. I’ve removed that plugin and it’s rock-solid now! Have fun playing on my rock solid server :)

Weather Balloon Updates

Hey guys! THis is just a quick post on the weather balloon. I’ve decided to not use an Arduino and instead use a Raspberry Pi. I will be using a USB webcam for capturing images and a NTX2 transmitter to send data. I am also thinking of using an old USB wifi adapter my friend gave me; if the weather balloon happens to land near an unsecure network, it could latch on to it and I could communicate with it from my home servers. This would be useful because the transmitter likely will not be powerful enough to transmit without line-of-site. The following parts will also be added: (specific details not decided)

GPS, Temperature sensor, Some sort of Carbon PPM sensor, Light Sensor, Altitude Sensor, and Pressure Sensor. I’ll likely add more, this is all that comes to me for now.

If you’re interested in the Weather Balloon project, it would be helpful if you donated! You wouldn’t believe the costs of launching a balloon!

Aperture Science; Anti-Grief World

Hey guys! I’ve been brainstorming a few ideas for extra worlds, tell me what you think!

1. Aperture Science

A creative world with plots, permissions to switch between creative and survival, sticks shoot portals, blue wool makes you jump, orange wool makes you run fast, basically, the details are here: http://dev.bukkit.org/server-mods/portalstick/pages/elements/

2. Survival Anti-Grief World

We’ve had complaints of people getting raided griefed, or both. I think a lot of us just want to play peacefully. I am considering adding a second world, where griefing isn’t allowed, pvping isn’t allowed, factions are only peaceful, and lockette would be there. Lockette would also be removed from the normal world. The inventories would be seperate.

Tell me what you guys think, and contact me if you want to build your own version of Aperture! :)

Error After Error After Error…

-_- Why does this keep happening?

Well, 2 days ago, our power went out for about an hour and a half. About 4 hours later, I awoke and turned on the server, but I forgot to open Minecraft, so I had to wait for 6 hours before I got back from school to run it.

Then, sometime last night, the server rebooted itself to perform a disk check. And it’s been at 51% since I started writing this post -_-

Hopefully, when I get back from school, it will be done and I’ll turn the server back on.

Update: 20 minutes later, just hit 52% :(

Whisk My Electronics off to Space?

Hi Guys! I bring something you’ll probably find very interesting, which isn’t minecraft-related!

I’m still thinking about whether or not I should do this, so there is no guarantee.

I’m considering launching a space probe! It will not actually be going to space, but it could get close! Depending on which balloon I use, I could get up to about 32 miles, or within the stratosphere.

I’m going to try to pay for it with money donated for that specific cause. This is in case it lands in the ocean or a lake, or something goes wrong. It shouldn’t be too much of a misfortune if it dies.

It will be controlled from my house, via a wireless connection to my arduino uno, which will be the main controller for the sensors.

The point at which I get stuck is being able to send bits and bytes to and from the arduino. Standard wifi will not work (after all, 32 miles up!)

The following sensors will be put on:

- Barometer $20
- Thermometer $5
- Accelerometer $30
- GPS $40
- 1-5 cameras

Post in the comments if you have any ideas for more sensors!
